Positive Behaviour Support: An Introduction

1 Day Max 20 Participants

This foundational course provides a clear definition of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). It places an understanding of behaviours of concern in the context of person-centred approaches to supporting quality of life that are both values-led and evidence-based. Participants will explore the function or meaning of behaviour and consider their own role in promoting and developing high-quality support.

Skills in Basic Functional Behavioural Assessment

2 Days Max 15 Participants

Pre-requisite Required: Attendees must have completed the Positive Behaviour Support: An Introduction course and passed the associated assessment.

This course provides participants with a definition of basic functional behavioural assessment and offers the opportunity to carry out a simple assessment in their work setting. To ensure sufficient time for supervised practice and the collection of meaningful data, a 6-month interval is required between the first and second training days.

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Understand what is meant by basic functional behavioural assessment (FBA) and its context
  • Familiarity with the tools used to complete a basic FBA
  • Understand the key elements of a basic FBA
  • Understand how FBA findings inform and develop a PBS plan
  • Understand the importance of co-production and multidisciplinary working
  • Assessment via a knowledge quiz and a reflective learning log of the assessment experience

Trauma Informed Approaches

1 Day Max 10 Participants

This course provides an understanding of theory and best practice when working with individuals who have experienced trauma or adverse life experiences. It develops knowledge of trauma-informed practices and weaves this into Positive Behaviour Support principles to develop attuned care approaches that are considerate of an individual’s lived experiences.

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the impact of trauma on individuals with learning disabilities, families, and networks
  • Understand how trauma can trigger behaviours of concern
  • Explore how PBS plans can be developed to incorporate the trauma perspective
  • Understand how trauma awareness enriches practice and the quality of support offered
  • Completion includes a short quiz to assess retained information
